Investigations on the Dublin-Belfast rail line are to continue today after the collapse of a 20-metre section of the viaduct across Malahide estuary last night.
Ground holding the track gave way, slipping into the estuary below. It is believed subsidence on the embankment caused the collapse.
The line will be closed for several weeks.
Iarnród Éireann said a serious incident was narrowly avoided after a driver on the 6.07pm train saw the damage on the line and stopped in time.
All northern commuter services have been suspended until further notice and bus transfers have been put in place to cater for those travelling between Dublin and Belfast.
Iarnrod Eireann Spokesman Barry Kenny said northbound rail users can expect disruption for some time.
A shuttle rail service has been put in place between Drogheda and Skerries, north of the landslide.
Replacement bus services are also running between Dublin and stations north of the city.
The Belfast Enterprise service will only run between Belfast and Drogheda, with bus transfers in and out of the capital.
Local Dart services between Malahide and Howth Junction resumed last night and are operating normally.
Dit betekent dat we hier in Donabate voorlopig niet meer met de trein naar Dublin kunnen rijden. Toevallig besloot ik vandaag met de auto te gaan...
